I checked off spoiler just in case if this will be considered as one.

A few reflections on the movie ... The cast is perfect, i usually choose a movie based on the cast. Tom Ford is new to me as a director. At moments movie holds you in a very long conversations and suspense makes you feel as it is happening with you. Very good. But let me add few others. Well on a second note I did give it a 7. It was an emotional experience of a man, and a few revealed secrets of life such as "like mother like daughter."

as you start watching you will remember me saying, "what the f@@@."

My friend wrote a book. Well many people write now. He goes, I don't know how to go about the title. I asked him if there are drums or a flute. He said no. Well, I go, call it "Without drums and flutes." it goes for the name of the movie.
Susan is a middle-aged art dealer with a handsome, rich husband who wallows in her upmarket LA home, unhappy and unfulfilled with her lot in life. She's sent a manuscript for a novel out of the blue from her ex-husband she hasn't spoken to in twenty years, causing her to look back and reflect on their relationship. The novel looks at Tony (who Susan imagines to be her ex-husband) who seeks revenge after the abduction, rape, and murder of his wife and daughter in dusty West Texas. I've read some ideas on how the novel connects to Susan, but I'm at a loss. Is the novel a form of revenge on Susan? I didn't get that impression at all.

Regret. Regret is what Nocturnal Animals is all about. Tony's regret over his inability to protect his family is what drives him to exact revenge. This sense of cultural masculinity permeates the whole movie, mirrored in Susan's flashbacks of her relationship with Edward, as he is deemed 'weak' again and again (in the same way Tony is accused of having a vagina). The power and intensity of the manuscript is what causes Susan to reflect on her relationship with Edward, and subsequently regret how it ended. She's older now, surrounded by money and style, but still feels unhappy because she pushed the one she truly loved away. Now she's all style with no substance.

There's one thing I will say in Nocturnal Animals' narrative favour; it is intense. While Ford obviously prefers the slower more dramatic moments, the first act of the manuscript proves he's adept with suspense and action as well. Bordering on harrowing, Tony and his family suffer harassment unimaginable and befitting of a horror thriller, and Ray and his flunkies unpredictably flitter between charming and violently threatening. This sequence alone makes it easy to understand how and why the manuscript affects Susan so deeply, and we, the audience, are there gasping along with her. While the intensity dies down after this scene, it never truly goes away, rearing it's head every now and then as the movie progresses, both in the manuscript narrative, and Susan's own life.

Visually, and unsurprisingly, Nocturnal Animals looks great. Every shot and scene looks meticulously composed, whether it's the minimalist style of Susan's expensive house, or the grimy interior of a trailer in the desert. And of course, considering Tom Ford's own area of expertise, the costuming is perfection. Susan's sense of fashion is modern and classy, complete with dead- straight hair over one shoulder and deep, dark lipsticks. Even her thick-rimmed glasses when she's out of the fashion-wear and engrossed in the manuscript scream of modern fashion. Thankfully this sense of high-art in clothing doesn't extend to the characters it should not. While Tony is depicted in open-collar shirts and handsome beard, Anders, the cop, and Ray, the redneck, are dressed more low-key and slack, reflecting the barren, dusty landscape around them.

The acting is also top level quality, helping to make the eclectic cast of characters flourish. Amy Adams is great as Susan, showing a depth and sadness to her character that bubbles beneath the surface. Jake Gyllenhaal juggles both the roles of a young Edward and Susan's own idea of Tony, playing them both anguished and helpless. Michael Shannon and Aaron Taylor-Johnson chew up their sandy scenery as the terminally-ill cop and psychopathic redneck respectively, while various cameos from the likes of Armie Hammer, Michael Sheen, Laura Linney, Isla Fisher, Jena Malone, and Andrea Riseborough prove that the supporting cast can keep up admirably.

Nocturnal Animals is a movie I feel I need to watch again to fully understand the scope of what Tom Ford was going for. It's full of fantastic, if not controversial imagery (including the already infamous title credits of mature, overweight women dancing naked in slow-motion), and scenes of intensity that are sure to rock viewers to their core, but it also feels a little messy and confused as to what it's trying to get across. It's obvious there is something here trying to be heard, made all the more apparent to it's ambiguous and anti-climatic ending, but that is is buried too deep for me to make out. I give Nocturnal Animals a solid 8/10.
Leading up to the release of Tom Ford's Nocturnal Animals I did not go out of my way to find out much about it. Not because I know Ford has a habit of surprising the viewer and not even because I myself wanted to be surprised. We live in the age of psychological thrillers and this one just sort of slipped under my radar, and once I started hearing about it more I just figured I would try to stay away from it as best as I can. I don't know if this is necessarily the best way to see Nocturnal Animals, but it was my experience and I will give you my impressions based on that.
